Gosainkunda, Laurebina Pass (4610m) via Helambu Trek
An excellent high level trek to the sacred lakes set amidst dramatic scenery
The sacred lakes of Gosainkund are visited every year at the full moon in August by many thousands of Hindu pilgrims. Lord Shiva is said to have created the high altitude lake with his trident, as he pierced a glacier to obtain water after consuming poison. This trek can be done on its own in 9 days, or combined with the Langtang valley trek, after which you continue into Helambu. This is quite a high trek reaching 4610 meters. It may be possible in winter depending on the snow conditions. It is also possible to do the trek from Helambu. From the top of the Laurebina pass there are superb views towards Manasalu and the Annapurna range. The walk from Dunche is very attractive, passing through forests and allowing excellent views of the Ganesh Himal. Once over the Laurebina pass and into Helambu, a warm welcome awaits in Melamchigaon and Tarkhegyang, with their Sherpa and Buddhist cultures.
